Honorary Secretary 1903-22
Chairman 1926-41
Served on the School Council from its foundation in 1903 until his death in 1941. For 17 years, from 1903 until he took a year’s leave in Britain in 1921, Tunks served as the secretary to the School Council. Resuming his seat on the Council in 1922, Tunks did not return to the role of Secretary but in 1927 he succeeded Mitchelson as Chairman of the School Council.
Tunks was also very active within the life of the Diocese, serving on the Diocesan Synod and the standing committee of the General Synod. Tunks served as Chancellor of the Diocese of Auckland for some twenty years, and he was a Lay Canon of the Cathedral Chapter. He was a Trustee of the Orphan Home Trust and very involved in the pastoral work of his own parish.
He is described as having a quiet, intelligent and incisive manner, and was highly respected for his legal abilities. Like Roberton and Mitchelson, Tunks’ investment in the School was not simply in terms of time and talent; all five of his daughters came to Diocesan.
