Cochrane House takes its name from William Steven Cochrane, a member of the Diocesan Girls' High School Council from 1906 - 1914 and General Secretary of the Melanesia Mission.
William Steven Cochrane came to New Zealand at 14 and entered his father's business. For 36 years he occupied the position of Secretary and Treasurer to the Diocese of Auckland and was active in the affairs of the Anglican Church in the Auckland Diocese. He was warden to St Marks, Representative at General Synod and member at various times of a General Synod.
In secular matters, Cochrane was involved with the adoption of the Manukau Water Supply Board. In earlier days, he was a member of the Epsom Road Board and Trustee of the Auckland Savings Bank. He took an active part in Athletics and was Captain of the Auckland Golf Club and a member of the Remuera Bowling Club.
