Sister House of Mary Pulling (1956)
Edwards House takes its name from Miss Eliza Edwards, the first New Zealander to be Headmistress of Diocesan School for Girls. Miss Edwards was Headmistress from 1933 - 1950 and is remembered as a very severe and serious person. Her particular contribution to Diocesan School for Girls was to keep it 'alive' during the great depression by encouraging a good, broad education, including physical work. She believed in a high standard of work, service and personal discipline and expected this from all members of the School.
Miss Edwards was not, however, without a more tender side, and former School House boarders remember her kindly reading stories to them on Sunday afternoons.
The House Banner designed by past Diocesan student Leanne Mcconchie, symbolises Miss Edwards' commitment to the Church, her strong belief in the value of women's education, her sense of the role of the school in the Diocese of Auckland and her love of flowers.
