Date1903 - 1973LocationCaretaker's CottageDescriptionOn the 1903 plan of the Hesketh Estate this small picturesque two storey building is labelled as ‘Stables’. Stable buildings often included a second storey which tended to be used as accommodation for the servants employed as drivers or grooms. Like many of our oldest buildings this seems to have been used for many and various purposes over the evolution of the campus, including senior boarding, accommodation for mistresses and as the Caretaker’s residence.
In 1968 in order to accommodate the Music Block, the caretaker (Mr Fletcher) was moved into a newly purchased house on Ngaire Avenue closer to Clyde Street, and his former dwelling shifted westwards across the drive to sit between the east end of I Block and the bungalow, which was in use as a library.
By 1970, the building was being used to house senior boarders and in 1973 the former stables were sold and moved offsite. The building known as the Caretaker's Cottage was purchased by Bubbles’ Bourke’s family for use as a beach house at Matheson’s Bay.
