Gail Thomson came to Dio in 1988 after she was appointed as the newly established deputy principal (formerly named senior mistress). She was previously the science teacher at Macleans College. She joined Miss Jane Bellamy (who had been deputy principal since 1979) and Mrs Deirdre McOnie (appointed deputy principal of the Primary Department in 1987) as members of Miss Dawn Jones new-look management team at the start of 1988.

On 25 December 1992 the school board announced that Mrs Gail Thomson had been appointed as Diocesan's new 'chief executive'. A deputy principal since 1988, Mrs Thomson had been acting principal on several occasions and was known as a 'people person' with a friendly, open manner. A lateral thinker with a hunger for excellence and a huge capacity for hard work, she was a lady who liked a challenge and was determined to preserve the traditional values of the school as it moved forward towards a new century and the start of a new millenium.

Mrs Thomson surprised everyone in 2003 by resigning to spend time with her family. She achieved a great deal during her time as Principal even being involved with the establishment of NCEA. Her involvement at a political level enabled a number of problems to be resolved before the new system was introduced in 2002 and helped to bring Diocesan more into the mainstream of the New Zealand education system than at any time in its history.
