Descended from School House (1905)
Mary Pulling is named after Miss Mary Etheldred Pulling, Founder Headmistress of the School who served from 1904 until her retirement in 1926.
Miss Pulling was a product of The Cheltenham Ladies College, one of the first British schools to provide young women with a modern academic education. She was also a devout Anglican and spent the last 21 years of her life as an anchoress, living a solitary religious life subject to vows of poverty, chastity and obedience.
During her time as Headmistress, Miss Pulling established much that was to become an integral part of the School - perhaps most importantly the role of the School Chapel and the commitment to service expressed in the School Motto. Miss Pulling's interests included religious subjects (she wrote several brochures as well as running much of the Church side of the School), drama (she was especially keen on "classical" plays produced during her time), art, needlework and architecture.
