Sister House of Neligan
Selwyn House was named after George Augustus Selwyn the first and only Anglican Bishop of all New Zealand. Bishop Selwyn presided over the Anglican Church in New Zealand from 1841 until 1869.
Bishop Selwyn was an extensive traveller of New Zealand, covering many miles on foot, as well as on horseback, by canoe and by boat. He naturally became a competent mariner and navigator.
His base was established in the Bay of Islands, but he later moved to Auckland. By the 1860s, the Diocese of New Zealand was reduced to Auckland, Waikato and Taranaki regions which, under Bishop Cowie, became the Diocese of Auckland - our founding Diocese. Bishop Selwyn is remembered for his tireless and energetic work in establishing the rich traditions of the Anglican Church in New Zealand and formulating the independent constitution of the Church in New Zealand.
He also played an important part in drawing the worldwide Anglican community into closer dialogue. Selwyn House banner doesn't include a motto but gives the names of New Zealand and Lichfield, the two dioceses that Selwyn served with energy and enthusiasm.
