Death: 11 April 1878
Bishop George Augustus Selwyn was the first Anglican Bishop to live and work in New Zealand [1841-1867] and the only Anglican Bishop of All NZ. He also presided over large areas of the South Western Pacific. The Dioceses of NZ, Melanesia and Polynesia are all offshoots of his original See.
A participant of the early 19th Century movements to revive the ancient traditions of the English Church, Selwyn introduced the Gothic Revival Architecture to NZ, as well as such practices as the use of candles and vestments and weekly Communion services and a renewed concern for pastoral work.
Originally from Bishop Selwyn’s House in Parnell, our St Barnabas Chapel, though much altered, reflects the Bishop’s interest in the traditions of the Church.
His name was first applied at Dio to a Boarding House run exclusively for Senior Girls in Mt St John Avenue from 1908 until 1926. His name was reapplied to our competitive houses when these were doubled in 1983.
