Ms Heather McRae joined Diocesan School for Girls in 2009, arriving from Pakūranga College where she had served as Principal.
She began her career as a teacher of science, chemistry and mathematics, later becoming Dean and Head of the Science Department at Awatapu College in Palmerston North. In 2002, Ms McRae helped establish the Western Academy of Beijing and became Principal and Director of Curriculum of its high school. She returned to New Zealand in 2004 to take up a leadership role at Pakūranga College.
In 2009, she was one of only two secondary school principals to serve on the Ministry of Education’s National Curriculum Advisory Group.
Over her 17-year tenure as Principal at Diocesan School for Girls, Ms McRae guided the school through numerous significant developments and events. These included the construction of the Aquatic Centre, the Sports Turf and the Performing Arts Centre (PAC), as well as the restoration of the Chapel and the transformation of the Shrewsbury building. She also led the school through the COVID 19 pandemic and the nationwide lockdowns of 2020 and 2021, including the extended lockdown period affecting the Auckland region from August to December 2021.
